This year, our Cub Pack celebrates 50 years of continuous existence.

To celebrate the Anniversary, a Pot-Luck Supper was held on Monday, February 24, 2014, at City View United Church, 6 Epworth Avenue, Nepean. We had a large turnout – just over 160 persons, including members, their families, some former 115 TH Volunteers, the Area Group Commissioner and other Scout Canada dignitaries.  In addition to the excellent food, entertainment was provided by the Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts.

Keith Egli, the City Councillor for the area, attended and presented the 115 TH Ottawa (Parkwood Hills) Scouts with a congratulatory certificate on behalf of himself and the City of Ottawa.

In 2012, we were successful in qualifying for an Ontario Trillium Grant which enabled us to purchase 13 new canoes for our very active water-based activities.  For more details, please visit our Website.  This acquisition created an urgent need for a new canoe trailer.

A Silent Auction, of donated items, was held alongside the Pot-Luck Supper to raise funds for this purchase.  The Auction proved very successful and the funds raised will provide a good start for this project.

Special Thanks to the many families and friends of the 115 TH Parkwood Hills Scout Group, including City Councillor Egli, who provided auction items, and to the following companies that provided us with items for the Auction:

MMM Group Ltd.                               1145 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa

In 2010 and 2011, the 115th Scouting program experienced high levels of growth and retention in all three sections, Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Sea Scouts. Anticipating continued growth of the Cub and Troop sections, the leaders decided that additional canoes would be needed to accommodate the training of an increasing number of youths and leaders.

To help with funding, the Group applied to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for assistance in purchasing suitable new canoes, and the Group began active fundraising efforts to reach our goal of financing the purchase of 10 canoes, in addition to paddles, PFDs and camping equipment. Our application was accepted by the Foundation in March 2012, and our leaders picked up10 shiny new Scott canoes from the Mid-Canada Fiberglass Company in New Liskeard, Ontario, in June, 2012.

Our application was accepted by the Foundation in March 2012, and our leaders picked up10 shiny new Scott canoes from the Mid-Canada Fiberglass Company in New Liskeard, Ontario, in June, 2012.

The canoes were first used the following month on a week-long canoeing adventure on the Rideau River by Sea Scouts and leaders.

By spring 2013, enrollment had grown to 22 Sea Scouts and 40 Cub Scouts, so we decided to purchase three additional canoes from the balance of the combined Trillium Grant and Group fundraising efforts, totaling more than $15,000.

The 115th (Parkwood Hills) Ottawa Group will be holding an in-house showing of the Child and Youth Safety (CYS) DVD on:

Monday, September 10, 2012, 7 PM – 8:30 PM

City View United Church, 6 Epworth Avenue.

Leaders and Parents are invited to attend.  This Session is being given as part of our commitment to ensuring that all of our leaders are in full compliance with the Scouts Canada requirements before taking part in any activities with the youths.

Since those parents who wish to volunteer for some activities, may be required to meet some of the same requirements, they are being given the opportunity to attend this safety course.

It is recommended that attendees read the Code of Conduct before the session so that they will be able to sign off on that as well.

Attendance will be recorded and this will assist leaders in their planning activities.

See you there.
